View of Regiopolis College from St. Mary's Cathedral

Title

View of Regiopolis College from St. Mary's Cathedral

Description

This photograph depicts the west facade of Regiopolis College, Kingston. The photograph was taken from either the belfry or possibly the spire of St. Mary's Cathedral (depending on the date of the photograph, which is not known for certain).

The College is shown before the renovations undertaken in 1892 by the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph to transform the building into the new Hotel Dieu Hospital which saw the addition of a main entrance and portico to the western side where Sydenham St. now runs, and altered the dome.

The photograph shows a great deal of the eastern section of the city, from the Christian Brothers Separate School in the foreground, to the Methodist and Presbyterian churches on Brock St. (neither of which still stands), City Hall, St. George Cathedral (before the dome was built in 1891), as well as the Royal Military College, Fort Henry, and the Kingston Fortifications.
